The high school system in New Zealand promotes a well-rounded education. Students in New Zealand are required to have completed course work (including assessments) to a satisfactory level each year before they can advance to the next grade. Students are encouraged to participate both in class and in after-school activities such as debate and music groups, and sports like cricket or rugby.
In New Zealand, education is compulsory for students between the ages of 6-15. About 70% of the students continue two years of school after the compulsory requirements in secondary school. Secondary schools consist of five years of study. Most EF students are enrolled in the last two years of school. The school year has four terms, which begin in February, April, July and October. Schools vary in size, from 100 to 2,000 students.
Most New Zealand schools
require students to wear school uniforms. Teachers must be
addressed by their surnames and titles (Mr./Ms./Mrs.).
