Occupational English
Test
is for
the overseas trained
health professionals who
wish to practice their
profession in Australia.
The
OET is designed to
check if the health
professionals from
Non-English speaking
background have
sufficient knowledge of
English language to be
able to communicate and
work in their field of
choice in Australia.
The
OET test is a Test
Of English ONLY;
however, it is the first
step in ascertaining the
candidates' professional
knowledge and
competence, and plays an
important role in the
decision making process
relating to candidates'
immigration matters.
The four main skills in
English are assessed,
i.e.: Listening,
Reading, writing and
speaking.
Candidates require a
minimum of grade B in
each skill in order to
satisfy the related
professional boards.
Based on the
requirements of AMC
(Australian Medical
Council), all skills
must be passed in one
sitting. The dentists
are, however, exempt
from this ruling as ADC
(Australian Dental
Council) rules have not
changed and the
candidates can pass the
four skills in multiple
sittings. It must be
noted that the validity
of the test is for two
years starting from the
date of the first passed
skill.
The tests in all four
areas have two
components:
 a general component
which is the same for
all professions, and
 a profession specific
component which varies
according to the
profession.
General component: The
Listening and the
Reading test-designs are
based on
general medical topics.
These tests are common
for all the candidates.
Professional component:
The Writing and the
Speaking tests are
designed to assess the
ability of candidates to
use English in a
professional context.
Although the framework
of the test is the same
for all the professions,
the contents vary
according to the nature
of the profession. The
ability of the
candidates to use
English in their own
field will be tested.
The total time is
approximately 3 hours.
The tests can take place
in one and /or possibly
two days, depending on
the number of
candidates.
Frequency of the test:
This test is carried out
6 times in 40 locations
around the world.
The test result is valid
for two years.
The English for Medical
Professionals is an
intensive 16 week course
